Chapter Secretary (CS)

isalambo ovalWelcome to the Universities' Academic Staff Union (UASU) Maasai Mara University Chapter Website.

The UASU, Maasai Mara Chapter was registered in 2014 following the award of Charter in 2013 and institutional change of name from the defunct Narok University College to Maasai Mara University. The launch of the Website is indeed a great milestone, a decade since its registration under the Narok University label.

This communication platform is supposed to supplement other modes of communication the Union leadership employs to engage with the membership and its various stakeholders. The Website has sections of the UASU chapter and national history, constant updates of news for members of academia, downloads of critical documents for the membership. The communication platform will also later capture membership data for anybody desiring to tap into the diverse membership skills.

The Union is guided by the principles of social justice and solidarity when performing its representational role. The membership has grown from 80 in 2014 to 179 in 2021. UASU faces a plethora of challenges ranging from ongoing court cases over the 2017-21 Collective Bargaining Agreement, reduced funding to the University sector, reduced student enrollment, and legislation and policies interfering with academic freedom. During this time in history, UASU is called upon to play its role of protecting workers' freedom and engaging employers to improve members' welfare. The Chapter has recorded some significant chapter and national achievements manifest in implementation in national and local CBAs and social welfare schemes. The Union will continue engaging the employer on implementation challenges for signed Agreements. To create focus, the Chapter is developing a five-year strategic plan and continuous engagement with employer.

The membership exercised its democratic right and voted new Chapter officials on 10th February 2021 to perform the representational role for the next five years. We believe with a participatory strategic planning process, the Chapter leadership will deliver on its mandate. As the Chapter CEO, I will endeavour to provide servant leadership and guide the team to achieve its goals. Welcome to our interactive website and please provide feedback. The leadership endeavours a proactive engagement with membership and responsiveness to any concerns raised.

*Solidarity forever! forever!*
